Sean Ingram Patterson Physiology, School of Medicine, UNC Associate Researcher in CONICET. Tel: 54 + 261 + 4135006 Extension: 2684 Fax: 54 + 261 + 4494117 In this laboratory we focus on the formation and function of membrane-associated signalling complexes in axon terminals and astrocytes in different kinds of neural lesions. Many signalling systems form multimeric complexes associated with membrane subdomains at the plasma membrane or on internal structures in response to external signals associated with growth, differentiation, survival and neurotransmission. The postranslational modification of proteins by lipids, particularly the process known as S-palmitoylation, has been proposed to play an important role in the formation and specification of these domains. Our research is directed towards illuminating the physiological role of this process during brain development and in response to specific forms of traumatic and toxic injury in the peripheral and central nervous system
